BIKE TO WORK DAY FRIDAY The annual Bike to Work Day is this Friday, May 16. In the early 90s, many District associates participated in the event (see photo). More than 40 Pit Stops will be located throughout the region providing a resting spot with free snacks and other refreshments to Bike to Work Day participants. LNG - DERIVED NATURAL GAS
California-based Sempra Energy plans to receive the first shipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at its Energia Costa Azul Terminal (ECA) in Baja California, Mexico, in the second quarter of this year. Subsequent to receiving this shipment, Sempra will be conducting commissioning operations at the new LNG facility. During this commissioning period, a significant amount of LNG will be vaporized and injected into the Baja California natural gas transmission system (pipeline) over a three to four day period. Because the Baja California transmission system is connected to San Diego Gas & Electric’s (SDG&E) natural gas transmission system, it is likely that a large portion of San Diego County will receive natural gas derived from LNG during this period. 3/08

NEW OZONE STANDARD
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency revised the National Ambient Air Quality Standards in Marchby lowering its 8-hour ozone standard from 0.08 ppm to 0.075 ppm.   EPA based the changes on the most recent scientific evidence about the effects of ozone, the primary component of smog.

Ozone air pollution levels in the populated coastal plane and inland valley areas of San Diego County already meet the new standard.  However, the downwind foothill region, as represented by the air monitoring station in Alpine, occasionally violates both the current and new standards.  Consequently, it is anticipated that EPA will designate San Diego County as a Nonattainment Area for the new standard in 2010.  Attainment deadlines have not yet been established by EPA, but could range from 2013 to 2030, depending on the severity of a region’s ozone problem.  The Air Pollution Control District will be required to submit an air quality plan to EPA in 2013, outlining the emission control regulations necessary to bring the entire region into attainment as expeditiously as practicable.  The District's goal will be to expeditiously achieve the standard while minimizing cost impacts.  03/08
