Hosted by District 4 Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Annual "Mowing Down Pollution" Lawn Mower Trade-in event has been successfully lowering harmful air pollution emissions by an average of 2.5 tons per year since 1999. To date, San Diego County residents have replaced over 8,000 gas-powered lawn mowers with zero-emission electric-powered mowers! This year, you too can help "mow down" pollution. Please join us!

  • What should I bring to the event?

Photo ID and proof of San Diego County residency. These include a California Driver License/Identification Card, OR any government I.D. along with a utility bill or your personal check that shows your name and residential address anywhere within San Diego County.

  • What old gasoline-powered equipment is eligible to be traded in?
Participants may trade-in a gasoline-powered lawnmower, chainsaw, hedge trimmer, and/or string trimmer for an equivalent rechargeable electric device.
    • Each device must be in working condition and have all appropriate parts attached.
    • Each item will be inspected to verify it is in working condition and eligible as a trade-in for the new electric item.
    • If possible, devices should be emptied of oil and gas (we will handle small residual amounts).
  • How many pieces of equipment may I trade in?

Each San Diego County resident may trade in up to four devices, but is limited to one of each type of device per household.

  • Where can I recycle oil and gasoline from my old equipment?

To obtain oil and gasoline recycling information, you may visit http://www.WastefreeSD.org or call 1-800-237-BLUE (1-800-237-2583).

  • Can I trade in an old lawnmower for a different piece of equipment (chainsaw/trimmer)?

No.  Trade is "like for like" (mower for mower ,chainsaw for chainsaw, etc.)

  • Can my old equipment be returned?

No.  Once the old devices are surrendered to the County, they cannot be returned.

  • What is the purchase price of the new equipment?

Purchase price of a new mower is $99.99 with gas-powered mower trade-in. Purchase price of a new string trimmer, chainsaw, or hedge trimmer is $79.99 with equivalent gas-powered trade-in. All prices inlcude tax.

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

Payment must be in cash or valid credit card with proper photo identification. NO CHECKS ACCEPTED

  • How many new lawnmowers, trimmers, and chainsaws are available?

There are 500 lawnmowers, 100 chainsaws, 100 hedge trimmers, and 100 string trimmers to be distributed on a first-come first-served basis to eligible San Diego County residents. You may trade in one item or any combination up to all four items.

  • How early should I arrive to the event?

Gates open at 4:30 a.m. (overnight waiting is prohibited). We suggest participants arrive earlier than the 8 a.m. start time as this is a popular event.  Feel free to bring a lawn chair for your comfort while waiting in line.

  • What should I do after parking my vehicle?

Once you are inside the parking area, you will be directed to line up with your old equipment.  "Participant Numbers” will be handed out starting at the beginning of the line.  You must remain in line with your old equipment in order to receive your “Participant Number.”

IMPORTANT: A “Participant Number” cannot be given to a fellow participant holding your place in line or watching your equipment.  At 8:00 a.m., the trade-in process will begin and you must be present to provide identification and to trade-in your old equipment.
